The composition sits inside an oval, a patch-like frame that gives the piece the look of a mission emblem. Within it, a space shuttle orbiter, stars and a curve of Earth's horizon are set in flat vector shapes. The Cyrillic word МИР, meaning "peace" and also the name of the station, appears alongside the crew names, including Tsiblиев, Lazutkin, Ewald and Linenger, along with mission markings.

Meaning & Symbolism

The emblem follows the heraldic conventions of Soviet and early post-Soviet mission patches, where crew names, station references and orbital imagery are arranged as a record of who flew and where. Launched on February 27, 1997, TM-25 kept a human presence aboard Mir during a decade when the station depended on Soyuz for crew rotation and emergency return. Its 184-day tenure included experiments in materials science, medicine and Earth observation, work that helped set the routines later carried into the International Space Station era.

Designed to Be Turned in the Hand

A mug is held and rotated, so the emblem reads in pieces as the cup moves. The oval frame fits the curve of the body, and the crew names sit where the eye lands as the mug is lifted. The design is faint when the mug is cold and comes into focus once a hot drink is poured in, so the patch is revealed through the morning ritual of making and holding a drink.
