The shield is a regular pentagon with a double border, set centrally with nothing competing around it. The letters SP sit above the numerals 161, both rendered as bold, evenly weighted type. Nothing is shaded or textured. The result reads at a glance, the way signs are meant to be read from a moving vehicle.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route shields are a language of their own. The pentagon marks a numbered road within a network, and the SP prefix identifies the road as part of the state highway system of São Paulo, Brazil's most populous state. The design is therefore about navigation and place: a road that connects towns, and a country defined partly by its vast distances. Its utilitarian, modern styling belongs to the everyday graphic vocabulary of road infrastructure rather than to ornament.

On the Color Morphing Mug

A road sign is built to be seen quickly, and a mug is a thing turned slowly in the hand, so the shield gets a longer look than any highway marker ever receives. Wrapped around the curve of the cup, the pentagon becomes a small landmark on the side you face each morning. The mug's hidden trick suits the design well: the shield is faint when the cup is cold and comes through clearly once a hot drink is poured in, so the route marker appears as the coffee arrives.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-161-brazil-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-SP161-11OZ-1FR87-front.webp?v=1793843406
