The shape is a pentagon with a thin inner border running parallel to its edges, a construction that reads instantly as a highway shield. Two lines of text sit at its centre: the letters SP above and the numerals 183 below, set in bold black so they carry at a distance. There is no shading, texture or background scene, only the sign itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route shields are tools for navigation. Each one tells a driver which road they are on and where it sits within a wider network. The SP prefix identifies the state of São Paulo, the most populous state in Brazil, and 183 is the number that places this particular road within it. The design is an emblem of Brazilian road infrastructure, everyday utilitarian signage given the clean, reduced lines of modern graphic design.

Turning It in Your Hand

A mug is read by turning it, and this design rewards that habit. The pentagon wraps around the curved body, so the outline and border stay continuous as the cup rotates, and the numerals come into view one stroke at a time. Held in both hands, it becomes a small roadside marker for a road you have already driven or one you have yet to take. It is a quiet, graphic piece that suits a morning coffee, or a gift for anyone who has spent time on Brazilian roads.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-183-brazil-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-SP183-11OZ-1FQM6-front.webp?v=1793841327
