Its numerals and letters sit at the centre of the composition, read straight on, with the sign format giving the artwork its clean, directional structure. Nothing competes with the designation, so the eye lands on the code first and the framing second. The result is a plain, legible graphic with a strong sense of order.

Meaning & Symbolism

A road sign is a promise of direction. In Brazil, state routes carry a prefix that identifies the state they cross, so "SP" places this route within São Paulo, the country's most populous state, and the numbering shows how it fits into the wider network of roads. The design celebrates that everyday language of travel, where a few characters tell a driver where they are and where the road leads. It is a quiet tribute to the country's landscape of long routes and the people who travel them.

Turning the Glass in Hand

A tall glass gives the sign a surface to wrap around. As the glass is lifted and turned, the route number passes across the eye in a single continuous line, the way a sign comes into view from the road. Gift it to someone who has a habit of planning trips by the map, or to a friend who has driven the length of a state for the sake of a good stop. The sign keeps its message on every turn of the glass, which suits a piece meant to be picked up and used again and again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-222-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-SP222-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793690850
