Nothing competes with the subject. The layout is built around one central motif, with open space around it, so the eye lands on the sign's shape before anything else. The catalogue identifier SP-307 runs alongside the design as its reference code, and the Brazil name sits at the centre of the piece as its main message.

Meaning & Symbolism

Road signs exist to tell people where they are and where they are heading. Used here, that function becomes a statement of place and national identity. The design's themes are Brazil, national identity and minimalism, and the three work together: a country is named plainly, without decoration, and the reduction itself becomes a way of saying the country needs no embellishment to be recognised. The original artwork is a catalogued thematic graphic, and this reproduction keeps its direct, uncluttered approach.

On the Mixing Glass

A glass like this is picked up, turned and carried, so a design on it is read at close range and from changing angles rather than from across a room. A road sign is also a shape meant to be read at a glance, and that suits a vessel held in the hand: the viewer meets the design in passing, the way a driver meets a sign on the way somewhere else. Pour a drink into it, set it down, and the name of the country stays in view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-307-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-SP307-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793744434
