A pentagon forms the single shape, with a nested outline running inside its edge so the border reads as a band rather than a solid line. The letters SP sit in the upper part of the shape and the numerals 401 below them. Black accounts for about a fifth of the image and the white field fills the rest, so the sign reads quickly and without ornament.

Meaning & Symbolism

Brazilian state highways are identified by a two-letter prefix naming the state that administers them. SP is the code for São Paulo, the most populous state in the country, and 401 is the route number within its network. The design therefore stands for wayfinding: a marker that tells a driver which road they are on and where it leads. It takes the visual grammar of modern transport signage and presents it as a simple emblem.

On the Ceramic Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the route marker passes in front of the eye with each turn of the cup. The nested black outline stays readable as the surface curves away, and the bold numerals hold their shape when the mug is seen from across a desk or kitchen counter. The sign is simple enough to recognise at a glance, which suits an object that is picked up and set down all day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-401-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP401-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793832115
