A regular pentagon sits at the centre of the composition, edged by a thick black border around a white interior, and the letters SP stack above the numerals 422. Black covers roughly a fifth of the image, so the white ground dominates. Nothing decorative sits outside the shape, which lets the sign read at a glance, the way roadside signage is meant to.

Meaning & Symbolism

Brazilian state highways carry a two-letter prefix identifying the state that maintains them. SP is the code for São Paulo, the most populous state in the country, and 422 is the route designation within its network. The design therefore stands for wayfinding itself: a marker that tells a driver where they are and which road they are on. It borrows the visual language of modern transport signage and renders it as a clean, minimal emblem.

On the Ceramic Mug

A mug is held in the hand and turned toward the eye, so the pentagon sits directly in the line of sight with every sip. The heavy black outline carries clearly across the curve of the cup, and the white ground keeps the numerals crisp when the mug is seen from a short distance across a desk or kitchen counter. Each refill brings the marker back into view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-422-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP422-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793832165
