Nothing competes with the central subject, so the sign's form and its one theme carry the image. The layout is direct: the eye lands on the sign first, and the rest of the frame stays quiet. The designation SP-437 names the piece as a road sign, a code rather than decoration.

Meaning & Symbolism

Road signs are a language of place. They tell travellers where a road leads and which region they are crossing. Here that language points to Brazil, a country whose geography and culture the design sets at its centre. Recasting a country as a route marker turns the artwork into a way of saying where you are.

On the Mixing Glass

A tall glass with a narrower base is turned in the hand, and the sign wraps around its curved wall as it moves. A road sign is usually read at a glance from a distance; on this object the reading happens up close, one turn at a time, as the glass is lifted or passed across a table. Each glance catches a different stretch of the sign as the curve rolls past, which suits a design that asks to be read in motion.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-437-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-SP437-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793722456
