The letters SP sit above the numerals 443, and the shape is drawn with a plain, even stroke. Nothing surrounds the marker, so the composition is restrained and every mark belongs to the sign.

Meaning & Symbolism

SP is the state code for São Paulo, and 443 is the route number the marker carries on the state highway network. Pentagonal shields of this type are a regular feature of Brazilian roads, so the artwork records a piece of everyday road infrastructure rather than an allegory about the country.

Shaped to the Cup

A mug is turned in the hand while it is held, and a clean outline like this one keeps its shape as the surface moves past the eye. The high contrast makes the route number easy to pick out from the handle side or from the front, which suits an object that is looked at up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-443-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP443-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793832213
