Black covers about a fifth of the artwork and white the rest, so the shield reads as a crisp, high-contrast silhouette. The pentagon outline sits centred and unadorned, with no background scenery or decorative border to compete with it. The numerals SP and 470 are the only text, set bold and legible, so the eye lands on the route code immediately. Nothing is layered or shaded, which keeps the composition as plain as the signs it imitates.

Meaning & Symbolism

A pentagonal shield is the standard marker for a numbered highway, and it tells a driver which road they are on before anything else. The SP prefix identifies the route as a state road in São Paulo, one of Brazil's 26 states, and 470 is its designation within that network. The design therefore stands for wayfinding itself: the quiet, practical language of roads that carry people from one place to the next. Its utilitarian tone is part of the point, turning a functional piece of signage into something to look at on purpose.

On the Mug

A mug is held in the hand and turned slowly while you drink, so the shield is seen from more than one angle over the course of a morning. The artwork wraps the full body of the cup, and the route marker is revealed as the mug warms: the design is only faintly visible when cold, and the black and white emerge when a hot drink is poured in. A road sign that appears only once the journey begins suits a cup that does the same thing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-470-brazil-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-SP470-11OZ-1FR40-front.webp?v=1793842854
