The pentagonal outline is drawn with a second, inset border, which gives the shape a framed, signed look. The letters SP sit above the number 585, both in bold, blocky characters that carry the whole composition. Everything is flat vector, with no shading or ornament, so the marker reads as a clean graphic rather than a picture.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pentagon is the form used on state route shields, the markers that tell travellers which numbered road they are following. SP is the standard abbreviation for the Brazilian state of São Paulo, so the mark stands for a route within that state, and 585 is the number that identifies it. The piece is a tribute to Brazilian roads as they appear on signs, reduced to shape, colour and number.

Where the Mug Comes In

A mug is turned in the hand as it is drunk from, so the pentagon will pass across the eye at every angle. The white ceramic surface lets the black outline and lettering read sharply, and the inset border keeps its line when the cup is rotated. Set on a desk, the marker looks like a small roadside sign placed beside the morning's first cup.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-585-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP585-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793831607
