An outer pentagon is followed by a second, smaller pentagon set inside it, and the space between the two forms a band of black. White fills most of the frame, roughly four-fifths of it, and carries the lettering. SP sits above the numerals 660, both set in dark type and centred on the vertical axis, so the sign reads as a single compact emblem.

Meaning & Symbolism

Brazilian state highways are identified by a two-letter code for the state that administers them. SP is the code for São Paulo, the country's most populous state, and 660 is the number of this route within it. The pentagon is the recognisable outline of a route marker, the sign that confirms a driver is on the correct road. Its spare, modern construction matches the look of present-day road signage.

Turned in the Hand

A mug is turned as it is drunk from, so the route marker passes across the eye in short, repeated views. The nested outline keeps its shape as the curved wall of the cup takes part of it out of sight. With no fine detail to lose, the numerals stay clear from a short distance, which suits a vessel that is picked up and set back down all day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-660-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP660-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793831773
