White covers roughly four-fifths of the design and black supplies the outline and the type. The SP sits on the upper half of the shield and the numerals 717 beneath, both in the same plain weight. The symmetry is strict, so the eye settles on the shape first and the number second.

Meaning & Symbolism

Brazil assigns each state highway a short code for the state that maintains it. SP is the code for São Paulo, the country's most populous state, and 717 is this route's number within the state network. The shield stands for wayfinding, the marker that tells a driver which road they have reached. Its restrained, modern drawing matches the way present-day road signs are designed.

Handled Daily

A mug is lifted, turned and set down many times a day, so the shield comes into view in short, repeated glances. The bold outline holds its shape as the curved wall of the cup carries it away from the eye. Because the design has no fine detail, the route number remains clear from across a table, which suits an object that lives within arm's reach.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sp-717-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SP717-11OZ-front.webp?v=1793831920
