Letterforms sit in a heavy, slanted stroke that leans forward with a sense of motion, the way a sign reads at speed from a moving car. The custom-drawn glyphs stand out most clearly: the distinctive forms of the A, M, N and lowercase i, and vowels marked with the acute accent known as the fada. Each character is set with the bold, even weight of a sign face, so the line reads as a single, controlled block of text.

Meaning & Symbolism

The typeface descends from Transport Heavy, designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, the pair whose signage system shaped how British and Irish roads speak to drivers. The Irish variant adapts that foundation for the Irish language, which needs glyphs and accents the original never carried. Its design follows the Traffic Signs Manual (TSM), Chapter 2, so every fada and altered letter is built to be read instantly. The result is a small, honest piece of national infrastructure: clear, standardised communication given a language of its own.

Made for the Shot Glass in Hand

A shot glass is small and held close, so the lettering is seen up near the eye rather than across a room. Each character becomes a detail to notice as the glass is lifted, and the slant of the type follows the tilt of the wrist. It is a quiet, cheeky nod to a road sign that is, somehow, always pointing you towards the next stop.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/transport-ire-character-set-ireland-shot-glass-15oz-GMY-SHOT-TRNR-1P5OZ-front.webp?v=1793586113
