tw-thwch196-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
TW THWch196 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

TW THWch196 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design takes the form of a route shield, the rounded sign Taiwan's roads use to point travellers to a numbered route, and fills it with a single black character and a route number.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is strictly black and white, with white covering most of the field and black reserved for the border and the lettering. A heavy rounded rectangle frames the whole composition, and inside it the Chinese character 彰 sits large in a clean black sans-serif, with the numerals 196 set beneath it. The flat vector treatment has no shading or texture, so the layout relies entirely on contrast and proportion. Nothing competes with the character, and the eye settles on it first.

Meaning & Symbolism

The character 彰 names Changhua, one of Taiwan's counties, and the number 196 works as the route identifier that pairs with it. Together they make a compact piece of wayfinding: a place and a path. Taiwanese road signage has long used this kind of shield to give drivers and walkers a fast, legible reference, and this design borrows that visual language, translating a functional sign into a modern graphic. The code THWch196 gives the artwork its own catalogue label, so the piece reads as both a regional motif and a reference point.

On the Mug

A mug is turned in the hand rather than viewed head-on, so the shield's border will travel around the curve of the cup as you rotate it, and the character and numerals come into view one stroke at a time. The bold black framing holds its shape from every angle, which suits a design built on strong edges. It is a quiet, graphic choice for a morning cup, and a conversation starter for anyone who recognises the road sign it came from.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwch196-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FKQK-front.webp?v=1793909121
