tw-thwch87-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
TW THWch87 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

TW THWch87 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design takes the look of a Taiwanese road sign and reduces it to one character, one pair of numerals and a single border.

Visual Elements & Composition

White dominates the artwork, covering roughly 88 percent of the field, with black making up the rest. A black rounded rectangle frames the whole composition and keeps everything inside it. At the centre sits the Chinese character 彰 in a bold sans-serif, large enough to read at a glance, with the numerals 8 and 7 set alongside it. A horizontal rectangle sits beneath the frame, reinforcing the sign-like structure. The flat vector style leaves no gradients or shading, so the black and white read as clean, hard-edged shapes.

Meaning & Symbolism

The character 彰 is the one used in the name of Changhua, a county in central Taiwan, and the numerals mark the route designation that road signs in the region carry. Together they make a piece of wayfinding, the kind of marker a driver sees and reads without slowing down. Signage like this is built to communicate instantly, and the artwork keeps that purpose intact, setting a place name and a route number against a plain white ground.

Turning the Mug in Hand

A mug is handled and rotated, so the sign is seen in passing rather than all at once. The character comes into view first as the mug is lifted, then the numerals and the black border follow as it turns. Because the design is so spare, each angle still reads as a complete sign, which suits a cup that gets picked up and put down many times a day. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who has navigated Taiwan's roads, or who simply likes their graphics direct and uncluttered.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwch87-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FKSR-front.webp?v=1793909409
