tw-thwkh17-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
TW THWkh17 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

TW THWkh17 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This mug carries a Taiwan Freeway route marker, a black-bordered shield printed in clean black on white, with the Chinese character 高 above the numerals 17.

Visual Elements & Composition

White fills most of the surface, roughly six parts in seven, and the black shield sits centred within it like a sign mounted on an empty road. The shield is a rectangle with rounded corners and a heavy black border, and the flat vector drawing has no shading, texture or decoration. The character 高 and the numerals 17 are the only text, stacked in a single bold column so the eye lands on them immediately. The result is a stripped-back graphic that reads at a glance, the way road signs are meant to.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route shields are the shorthand of the road network, and this one comes from Taiwan's freeway system. The character 高 points to the freeway designation, while 17 identifies the specific route, so the sign tells a driver which road they are on without a single word of explanation. Taiwan is referenced directly through the TW abbreviation in the title, tying the design to the island and its highways. The artwork recreates a modern, functional piece of signage rather than a historical one.

Designed for the Hand

A road sign is built to be read from a distance, but a mug is read up close, turned slowly in the hand as the coffee goes down. The high-contrast shield suits that rotation: wherever the handle sits, the black border and the bold 17 stay in view, and the white field keeps the design crisp against the cup. Whether it is the first cup of the morning or a long afternoon on the road in thought, the shield is always right there to read.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwkh17-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FL4L-front.webp?v=1793910759
