tw-thwpt161-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
TW THWpt161 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

TW THWpt161 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design borrows the plain visual language of a Taiwanese road sign, reduced to a single black character and a route number on a white field.

Visual Elements & Composition

White fills nearly the whole surface, with black taking up only a small share of the image. At the centre sits the black Chinese character 屏 inside a rectangular border, drawn in a flat vector style with no shading or texture. Beside it, the numerals 161 sit in the same black. Nothing competes for attention. The rectangle, the character and the numerals form a clean, modern layout that reads at a glance, like the signs drivers pass on a highway.

Meaning & Symbolism

The character 屏 is the opening character of Pingtung (屏東), the county at the southern tip of Taiwan, and the number 161 marks a provincial route that runs through it. Together they work as a wayfinding code: a region followed by a road. Taiwan's road signage is built on this kind of compact marker, which makes the design a direct portrait of how the island's roads are named and navigated.

Designed for the Hand

A road sign is meant to be read from a distance, but a mug asks for something different. The lettering turns with the cylinder as you lift it, so the border and character pass in front of you one slice at a time. Your eye follows the rectangle around the curve, and the route number comes into view as you rotate the mug toward you. The sign that would normally stand beside a road ends up on the table beside your coffee, a small piece of Pingtung travelling with you.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwpt161-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FKBZ-front.webp?v=1793907309
