A bold, sans-serif Chinese character, 屏, sits at the centre of a field of white, with the numerals 28 set beside it. A thin rectangular border frames the whole arrangement, so the piece reads as a sign face rather than a picture. The flat vector style keeps every edge crisp, and the lack of ornament means the character and numerals carry all the attention.

Meaning & Symbolism

The character 屏 (píng) means screen or shield, and it appears in place names across Taiwan. Paired with the number 28, it follows the same logic as the route markers on Taiwanese roads, where a character and a number together identify a place and a way through it. The rectangular frame borrows the visual grammar of traffic signage, which is where the design takes its authority. It is a modern, minimal take on an everyday public language, and its roots are firmly in Taiwan.

Reading the Mug in Hand

A mug is turned slowly in the hand, so the artwork unfolds as you rotate it. The frame wraps the curve of the cup, and the character and numerals come into view one side at a time, the way a sign reveals itself from a passing car. The white field suits the morning ritual of coffee or tea, and the black lettering stays legible from across the table. It makes a sharp, cheeky conversation piece for anyone who has ever followed a road sign with a map in their lap, or who simply likes their design with a little direction.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwpt28-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FKCY-front.webp?v=1793907423
