tw-thwty51-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
TW THWty51 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

TW THWty51 (Taiwan) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design takes the look of a Taiwanese route marker and turns it into a clean, black-on-white graphic that reads at a glance.

Visual Elements & Composition

Black dominates the artwork against a field of white, with the black taking up roughly an eighth of the space. At the centre sits a rounded rectangle with a rectangular border, and inside it the Chinese character 桃 sits beside the numerals 5 and 1. Nothing else competes for attention. The flat, vector-style shapes keep the layout simple, so the characters do all the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sign reads 桃51, a route marker in the style used on roads in Taiwan. The character 桃 identifies the Taoyuan area, and the numerals mark the route number, so the whole plate works as a piece of wayfinding. The title's "TW" points to Taiwan, and the modern, minimal treatment places the sign in a contemporary idiom rather than a historical one. The artwork is about how a place labels itself, shown through a single road sign.

Made for the Hand, Read at Close Range

A mug is turned slowly in the hand, so the sign rotates into view one side at a time. The bold black character and numerals hold up at that distance, and the white field around them works like a clear road shoulder. It is the kind of design you read first over a morning coffee, and the kind a friend who has driven those roads will recognise at once.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/tw-thwty51-taiwan-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-TWTHW-11OZ-1FJID-front.webp?v=1793903696
