Antique gold warms the scalloped-edge frame, and cream lifts the face and collar. Dark brown anchors the shadows and slate deepens the background at the edges of the case. The seated figure sits centred in the rectangular frame, the kepi crowning the composition and the cravat drawing the eye down to the chest.

Meaning & Symbolism

The kepi is the detail that names the sitter's unit. The Crescent City Guards were a New Orleans militia company, and their cap places the portrait in the city and in the early years of the American Civil War. Tinted tintypes of this kind were popular with soldiers and their families, who kept them as keepsakes of a man leaving home. The image records a single member of a local company at the moment his uniform was set down in silver.

Held and Turned

A pint glass rises in a tall, curved wall that the hand lifts and rotates, so the scalloped frame travels around the glass as it moves. The kepi sits at the top edge where the eye lands first, and the cravat falls at the middle of the surface. The portrait is built for close viewing, much as a tintype is tilted in the light to bring up its tones.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/unidentified-soldier-in-confederate-uniform-and-crescent-city-guards-of-new-orleans-kepi-us-civil-war-pint-glass-16oz-16oz-position1.webp?v=1758626611
https://gomugyourself.com/products/unidentified-soldier-in-confederate-uniform-and-crescent-city-guards-of-new-orleans-kepi-u-s-civil-war-pint-glass-16oz
