Nothing competes with the lettering, so the identifier is the first thing read and the layout stays direct and uncluttered.

Meaning & Symbolism

The SSH prefix stands for Secondary State Highway, a branch route in Washington's older numbering system. The number 11 links the branch to Primary State Highway 11, and the letter E marks it as one of the branches that stemmed from that primary route. Washington's system of this kind was used from 1937 and replaced with the modern State Route numbers after the 1964 reorganisation, so the code records a piece of the state's earlier road administration.

Held in the Hand

A mug is turned in the hand and lifted toward the face, so the designation is seen at close range. The centred lettering sits at the front of the cup, where it is read first each time the mug is raised for a drink.
