A rounded-rectangle shield sits at the centre of the composition, with the numerals 12 and the letter G dominating the field and WASHINGTON lettered across the marker. A small profile silhouette is included, tying the sign to George Washington and adding a patriotic accent to an otherwise purely graphic treatment.

Meaning & Symbolism

Secondary state highways such as SSH 12-G were branch routes that fed into the primary highway network. Markers of this kind were in use from 1937 until Washington's state highway renumbering in 1964, when the route numbering system changed. The shield records a classification scheme in which subordinate roads were defined in relation to main arteries, and it stands as a reference to the state's early transport planning and the network that came before the current State Route system.

Read at Arm's Length, Every Morning

A mug is turned in the hand and raised close to the face, so the shield is seen at reading distance rather than from a passing car. The wraparound print lets the marker sweep across the curve of the cup as it rotates, and the high-contrast black and white keeps the numerals and lettering crisp at that short range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/wa-ssh12-g-washington-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-25794906647917579682-front.webp?v=1793586829
