The rectangular marker is laid out as a flat, graphic unit, with the numerals 21 and the letter B forming the central designation and WASHINGTON set across the sign. The George Washington profile is included as a silhouette, giving the piece a patriotic note against the plain typography.

Meaning & Symbolism

The SSH prefix denotes a secondary state highway, a branch route that connected to a primary highway, and the number 21 links this branch to Primary State Highway 21. The letter B marks it as one of the branches stemming from that route. Washington's highway system from 1937 used these designations until the state reorganised its numbering in 1964, after which the markers were removed and replaced with State Route numbers.

Turned Toward the Eye

A mug is turned in the hand and raised toward the face, so the marker is seen at close range rather than from a roadside. The sign wraps across the curve of the cup and comes into view a section at a time, and the strong black-and-white contrast keeps the 21-B designation sharp as the cup turns.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/wa-ssh21-b-washington-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-26064034949612786456-front.webp?v=1793585344
