The U.S. shield, with the letters U and S above the number 2, sits at the centre of the frame, and the state name runs across the rectangle below it. The layout is clean and symmetrical, so the shield reads at once as a federal route marker.

Meaning & Symbolism

U.S. Route 2 is one of the long east-west federal highways, and in Washington it links Everett with the Idaho state line. The shield is the national marker used on federal routes across the country, which sets it apart from the state and county signs that sit within the same network. The design celebrates the Pacific Northwest and the long-distance road that carries travellers across the state.

Carried Across the Cup

A mug is turned in the hand, so the shield passes across the curve of the cup and returns to view with each turn. The centred number 2 sits at the front where it is seen first, and the high-contrast black on white keeps the U.S. shape clear as the cup is raised for a drink.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/wa-us2-washington-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-21046359989444491249-front.webp?v=1793585121
