The arrangement is formal and heraldic, with no lettering to break up the two main colours. The palette of red and white gives the flag its strong contrast, and the square cross sits at the centre of the field.

Meaning & Symbolism

The white cross on red is the traditional emblem of the House of Savoy, the dynasty that ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia. As a naval ensign it identified the kingdom's ships at sea during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The ensign had to be told apart from that of the Knights of Malta, which uses a similar cross, and Savoyard naval flags of this era were marked with distinguishing features to avoid confusion.

Turned in the Hand

A mug is turned in the hand, so the cross moves across the curve of the cup and comes into full view as it rotates. The red field fills the surface around the cross, and the white body of the mug keeps the cross crisp at the front and around the side.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/war-ensign-of-the-kingdom-of-sardinia-1785-1802-italy-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772556398
https://gomugyourself.com/products/war-ensign-of-the-kingdom-of-sardinia-1785-1802-italy-white-coffee-mug
