In the upper hoist sits a red canton, and inside it a white Greek cross with equal arms stands out in stark contrast. A gold crown tops the cross, the only metallic accent in the piece. The palette of blue, crimson, white and gold is limited and balanced, and the flat shapes are arranged with the formal precision of a state banner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The white cross on red is the traditional arms of Savoy-Sardinia, and the crown identifies the royal authority of the kingdom. The ensign was adopted on 1 June 1816. Its design was chosen to avoid confusion with the flags of the Knights of Malta, whose white cross also appears on red. It was superseded in 1848 by a tricolour adopted under King Carlo Alberto, which marks the end of its period of use.

Seen Close on a Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the canton and the cross come into view as the cup rotates, while the blue field fills the wider curve of the surface. The crown sits at the top of the design where it catches the eye first, and the white cross stays crisp against the red and blue on the white body.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/war-ensign-of-the-kingdom-of-sardinia-1816-1848-aspect-ratio-31-76-italy-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772556434
https://gomugyourself.com/products/war-ensign-of-the-kingdom-of-sardinia-1816-1848-aspect-ratio-31-76-italy-white-coffee-mug
