The shield is pared down to its essential geometry: a clean outline, an inverted triangle and a triangular element that structure the composition. The text is limited to the route number 00 and the letters W, I and S, which identify the state. Nothing is ornamental. The result is a flat, high-contrast graphic where the shape and the numerals do all of the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

A route shield was a way to identify a state highway on the road, and the 1927 period is when American highway marking began to standardise. The template reflects that early system, in which a shape and a number told drivers which road they were on. The letters W, I and S name Wisconsin, so the marker speaks for the state while the numerals speak for the route. It is a compact record of how early twentieth-century roads were labelled across the country.

On the Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so a shield with a central number suits it well: the numerals come round to the front as the mug rotates, and the white ground reads cleanly against the coffee or tea inside. The graphic is simple enough that it stays readable from the handle side as well as the front, which is the way a road sign is meant to be read as a driver passes it.
