wis-14-1919-wisconsin-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
WIS 14 1919 (Wisconsin) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

WIS 14 1919 (Wisconsin) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design sets the letters WIS against the number 14 and the year 1919, a compact Wisconsin reference built from clean modern type.

Visual Elements & Composition

Black characters sit on a white field, and the arrangement is deliberately plain. The three letters of the state abbreviation open the line, followed by the route number 14 and the date 1919. Spacing does most of the work: the gaps between the characters are as much a part of the composition as the characters themselves, and the high contrast keeps each one sharp. A simple inverted triangle appears among the shapes, a small geometric note that echoes highway signage.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route numbers and dates like these are the kind of identifiers that appear on road markers and in transport records, so the design reads as archival rather than ornamental. Wisconsin is the state the letters point to, and 1919 places the reference in the early years of organised state highway planning. Set in a modern graphic style, the old signage vocabulary becomes a way of celebrating regional identity without any illustration at all.

On the Coffee Mug

A mug is turned in the hand as it is lifted, so the line of characters travels around the cup and reveals itself a little at a time. The white ceramic gives the black type a crisp background, and the composition is spread across the whole wrap, so the reading shifts with each turn. It is a quiet, orderly design for a morning cup, where the state reference can be read slowly over the first sip.
