1 Special Forces (U.S. Army) The United States Army's 1st Special Forces Regiment, commonly known as the "1 Special Forces" or "the Green Berets," is a specialized elite force within the U.S. military. These units are part of the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), and their primary role involves unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, counter-terrorism, and training and advising indigenous security forces. They are renowned for their ability to operate behind enemy lines, conducting guerrilla warfare and other missions requiring extensive infiltration skills and long-term presence. The 1st Special Forces Regiment was established on July 2, 1952, during the Cold War era as a response to emerging threats that couldn't be addressed by conventional military forces. Since then, they have served in various conflicts, including Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.
