The 172nd Engineer Battalion is a unit of the United States Army under the Combat Engineering Brigade, 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives) located at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, Florida. Originally activated in 1943 as the 761st Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II, this battalion has since served in various capacities throughout military history. Today, its primary mission involves conducting specialized combat engineering operations to ensure freedom of maneuver for friendly forces and denying it to enemy forces by destroying, neutralizing, or clearing obstacles and terrain impediments. The 172nd Engineer Battalion specializes in the use of explosives, breaching, bridge construction, combat earthmoving, mine warfare, and general engineering support. The battalion's current mission set includes CBRN Consequence Management (CBRNCM), which focuses on detecting, identifying, rendering safe, recovering, or destroying chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive hazards to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. The unit's soldiers are trained in advanced combat engineering techniques and operate specialized equipment such as mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles, armored bulldozers, and bridge layers. They provide engineering support for airborne, air assault, airfield construction, and other specialized operations in support of the joint force.
