Symbolism
Gold represents the Chemical Warfare Service. The dragon clutching a lightning bolt symbolizes the unit's aggressive stance and its capability to combat fire, gas, and smoke. The lightning bolt reflects the unit's ability to use and counteract these elements, while the automobile wheel signifies the unit's mobility for rapid response.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was initially approved for the 2d Separate Chemical Battalion on August 8, 1940. It was redesignated for the 2d Chemical Mortar Battalion on February 26, 1951, and later for the 2d Chemical Weapons Battalion on August 3, 1953. The insignia was rescinded on November 15, 1963, and reinstated and redesignated effective September 1, 1981, for the 2d Chemical Battalion.
