'2d Rhode Island Infantry 009 (U.S. Civil War)' The 2d Rhode Island Infantry, Regiment Number 009, was a military unit that served in the United States Army during the American Civil War. Originally known as the 1st Separate Company of Riflemen, they were later redesignated as the 2d Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry and participated primarily in the Eastern Theater of the war. The regiment was comprised of nine companies, with each company consisting of approximately 100 soldiers. Notably, the 2d Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was one of the first Union units to incorporate African American soldiers, with Company D being an all-black company.
