Description/Blazon

On a shield, divided per bend yellow and red with a yellow border, a blue silhouette of a prospector kneeling and panning for gold.

Symbolism

The shield’s shape is inspired by the vigilante shields used by various early California vigilante organizations. The prospector symbolizes the 1849 gold rush in Northern California, the region where the Division is currently based, highlighting the era's need for vigilantism and the origins of the California Army National Guard. The colors red and yellow reflect California's early Spanish history, while blue and gold represent the traditional colors of the State of California.

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 5 July 1949.
