The 85th Infantry Regiment is a conventional infantry unit of the United States Army. Established on July 1, 1942, during World War II, it served primarily in the Pacific Theater, particularly in the Battle of Guam and Okinawa. After the war, it was one of the original units assigned to occupy post-war Japan under the occupation force known as the United States Army Forces Japan (USAFJ). The regiment is part of the U.S. Army's Regular Army, with its lineage traceable to the 85th Infantry, which was organized in 1917 for service during World War I but saw no combat. The current 85th Infantry Regiment is under the command of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) and is headquartered at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. These battalions are frequently rotated between bases in the United States and overseas assignments under various combat units.
