The 86th Infantry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army, established on November 14, 1917, during World War I. It was first assigned to the 42nd (Rainbow) Division and saw action in France from 1918. After WWI, it continued to serve during peacetime, being called up for various conflicts including the Korean War, where it earned a Presidential Unit Citation. The regiment is part of the United States Army National Guard and operates under the jurisdiction of the Army National Guard of multiple states. Notable battles fought by the 86th Infantry Regiment include the Battle of Bocage in Normandy, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, and numerous operations throughout its history. The regiment is also known for its distinctive black beret, a tradition dating back to World War I.
