Description/Blazon

An olive drab disc featuring a double quatrefoil horizontally divided into red on top and blue on the bottom, with a white center.

Symbolism

The double quatrefoil, traditionally a heraldic mark for the ninth son, is rendered in red and blue, the colors representing an Infantry Division headquarters flag. The white center symbolizes the numerals used on divisional flags.

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 9th Division on 18 November 1925. It was redesignated for the 9th Infantry Division effective 1 August 1942. The insignia was amended on 27 February 1970 to adjust the design dimensions and provide for overedge stitching.
