Admiral David Dixon Porter was a prominent U.S. Navy officer during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Born on August 3, 1813, in Trenton, New Jersey, he served as an officer in the United States Naval Academy before the war. Throughout his career, Porter played significant roles in several key naval battles of the Civil War, including the Battle of Hampton Roads and the blockade of Confederate ports along the Atlantic coast. After the war, he continued to serve in various positions within the Navy until his retirement in 1891. Known for his boldness and resourcefulness, Porter received numerous accolades for his service, including the rank of Rear Admiral, which was later elevated to Vice Admiral.
