Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862) was a prominent American military officer who served in the United States Army before the outbreak of the American Civil War. He is best known for his role as a Confederate general during the Civil War, particularly for his command at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, where he was fatally wounded. Born in Kentucky, Johnston was educated at West Point and rose through the ranks to become a major general in the U.S. Army before resigning in 1853 due to disagreements over policy with President Franklin Pierce. He later served as a senator from Texas prior to the Civil War. In the Confederate States Army, Johnston held several important positions, including command of the Western Department, a strategic area encompassing much of the Southern heartland. His strategy was focused on defensive tactics and preserving resources for future offensives. Johnston's most significant military engagement took place at Shiloh, Tennessee, where his forces were surprised by an attack led by Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Despite initial successes, Johnston was mortally wounded during the second day of fighting and died later that same day. His death marked a turning point in the war as command was handed over to General P.G.T. Beauregard, who implemented more aggressive tactics that ultimately led to Confederate defeat at Shiloh.
