**** Benjamin F. Butler, Maj. Gen. (U.S. Civil War) **** Benjamin Franklin Butler (July 5, 1818 – January 11, 1893) was a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and served as a U.S. Representative and Governor of Massachusetts. A native of New York, he earned a reputation for his legal career before the war, particularly for his work on railroad and banking cases. In 1861, Butler was appointed governor of Virginia-occupied Massachusetts and later commissioned as a brigadier general in the Union Army. During the Civil War, he played an instrumental role in several key battles, including Fort Pulaski and the First Battle of Bull Run. He is most famously associated with the "Butler's Devil" incident during his command at New Orleans, where he ordered Confederate prisoners to be put to work repairing fortifications but refused to feed them, leading to their nickname. Post-Civil War, Butler served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1869–1873) and was governor of Massachusetts (1882–1883). Despite facing controversy throughout his career, particularly due to his political reforms as governor, he remains an important figure in American military and political history during the 19th century.
