Benjamin McCulloch, C.S.A. (U.S. Civil War) Benjamin McCulloch was a prominent officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Born on May 21, 1811, in Tennessee, he later moved to Texas where he settled as a planter and slave owner. After serving in the Mexican–American War and attaining the rank of brevet major general, McCulloch returned to civilian life. At the outbreak of the Civil War, McCulloch joined the Confederate army, rising rapidly through the ranks due to his military experience and strategic acumen. He served under General Albert Sidney Johnston in the Army of Tennessee and played a significant role in the Battle of Pea Ridge (Arkansas), where he commanded a division despite being outnumbered by Union forces. Tragically, McCulloch was killed during the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern in the same engagement, making him one of the first high-ranking Confederate officers to perish in the Civil War. His legacy as a brave and skilled soldier continues to be honored in both military history and Texas folklore.
