Benjamin McCulloch was a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War. Born in Tennessee in 1805, he served in the U.S. Army before resigning in 1846 to join the Texas Revolution. After the outbreak of the Civil War, McCulloch joined the Confederate forces. Notable battles commanded by McCulloch include the Siege of Pea Ridge and the Battle of Hempstead County, both in Arkansas in 1862. McCulloch's career was cut short when he was accidentally killed by his own troops during an attack on a Union outpost at the Battle of El Reno in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1863. McCulloch is remembered for his bold tactics and leadership skills, although these qualities occasionally led to overconfidence and impulsive actions that resulted in losses for his troops. His death was a significant blow to the Confederate forces in the West.
