The Flag of Rio de Janeiro is a symbol of the federal district and one of the 26 states of Brazil. Adopted on November 15, 1960, it consists of six horizontal bands of yellow (top and bottom) alternating with green (the other four). In the center is the coat of arms of Rio de Janeiro. The flag represents the city's historical association with the sea (yellow) and its lush vegetation and natural environment (green), as well as its status as the capital of Brazil during the Empire (1822-1889).
