The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) is a historical political and paramilitary organization that was active primarily during the 20th century in Ukraine. It played a significant role in the struggle for Ukrainian independence, particularly during World War II. Founded in 1929 as an amalgamation of several smaller Ukrainian nationalist groups, OUN advocated for an independent Ukrainian state free from Polish and Soviet control. The organization was divided into two main factions: the military wing (OUN-B) led by Stepan Bandera, and the more moderate political wing (OUN-M). During World War II, the OUN-B collaborated with the German forces in their invasion of the Soviet Union to gain independence for Ukraine. After the war, they engaged in armed insurrection against both the Soviets and the Polish authorities. The OUN played a crucial role in establishing the short-lived Ukrainian State in exile during 1944-1945. In the post-war period, the OUN transformed into a political party, competing in democratic elections within Ukraine. However, it was eventually outlawed by the Soviet Union. Today, the legacy of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists remains contentious, with some viewing them as national heroes and others condemning their wartime collaborations and post-war activities.
