The Soyuz TM-22 was a spaceflight mission that took place as part of the Soyuz program, which is Russia's manned spaceflight program. Launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 27, 1991, Soyuz TM-22 was the 22nd flight of a Soyuz spacecraft to dock with the Mir space station. The mission marked the first time that a Russian cosmonaut and an astronaut from another nation simultaneously inhabited the Mir complex. The crew consisted of Russian Commander Aleksandr Laveykin, Japanese astronaut Toyohiro Akiyama as the payload specialist, and astronaut Norman Thagard from the United States. The mission concluded on October 18, 1991, when the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft returned to Earth, bringing the crew safely back to Kazakhstan.
