The Soyuz TMA-1 was a spacecraft that originated from the Soyuz Programme, a human-rated manned spacecraft still in use today. Launched on April 28, 2001, the mission marked the start of the collaboration between NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) for the International Space Station (ISS). The Soyuz TMA-1 carried a three-person crew to the ISS, where they joined Expedition 3. It was the first flight in the Soyuz TMA series, which replaced the earlier Soyuz TM models and introduced several improvements for safety and comfort during long-duration spaceflight. After spending about five months on the ISS, the crew returned to Earth safely on September 26, 2001. The mission was instrumental in ensuring continued manned presence aboard the ISS during the transition from Space Shuttle flights to the Soyuz spacecraft for visiting crews.
