The United States Forces Korea (USFK), also known as USAE (United States Army Forces Korea), is a combined field army under the command of the United Nations Command (UNC) and the U.S. Department of Defense. Its primary role is to provide the ground component of the alliance structure with South Korea, aimed at deterring aggression in the Korean peninsula. The USFK was established on July 8, 1950, following North Korea's invasion of South Korea during the Korean War. Today, it consists of approximately 28,500 U.S. soldiers stationed throughout South Korea, with a significant presence in Seoul and major cities. The USFK plays an essential role in maintaining regional security alongside the Republic of Korea (ROK) military, and has been instrumental in various peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.
