Washington, District of Columbia. Brazilian Steamer (U.S. Civil War) The Washington refers to a Brazilian steamer that was captured by the Union Navy during the U.S. Civil War. Originally named the Amazonas and built in England, this steamship served in the Brazilian Navy until it was seized at the port of Washington, D.C., in 1863. The ship's capture had significant strategic importance due to its advanced armament, making it a valuable addition to the Union fleet. Post-capture, the vessel was renamed USS Washington and saw service primarily along the eastern seaboard and the West Indies until the end of the Civil War.
