1 Group (U.S. Army) 1 Group, officially known as the U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC), is a key component of the United States Army's special operations aviation forces. It is headquartered at Fort Rucker, Alabama and falls under the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC). The primary role of 1 Group is to provide specialized aviation support for U.S. Army Special Operations Forces in various missions such as combat search and rescue, close air support, reconnaissance, and direct action operations. The units under its command are specially trained to operate from unimproved landing zones, small airstrips, and even helicopter decks on ships. The command consists of several active-duty and National Guard aviation brigades that operate various aircraft types, including the UH-60 Black Hawk, MH-47 Chinook, and AH-6 Little Bird. These airframes are customized to meet the unique requirements of special operations, such as night vision systems, weaponry, and ballistic protection. The mission of 1 Group is to provide responsive and effective aviation support to Special Operations Forces around the globe, in order to accomplish their primary missions of unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, direct action, counter-terrorism, and foreign internal defense.
