Symbolism

The yellow shield represents Cavalry. The wavy fess and gliding snake symbolize the Snake River, located in the valley where the Regiment was based.

Background

It was redesignated for the 183d Field Artillery Regiment on November 15, 1940, and then for the 183d Field Artillery Battalion on September 13, 1943. The insignia was redesignated for the 116th Armored Cavalry Regiment on June 19, 1950, and later revised for the 116th Cavalry Regiment effective September 1, 1989.
